Dumb Idea: Let’s write a new templating language
August 21st, 2008 at 10:30am | 6 CommentsAt work, we’re going to be redesigning a site that is running Textpattern. As I’ve never worked with Textpattern before, I’ve been brushing up. After about two minutes of reading, I find out that it has it’s own XHTML-style templating language. Textpattern immediately loses a lot of credibility. The article I was reading rationalizes the ... read more »

“Professional” Work Experience
June 21st, 2008 at 1:06am | 3 CommentsWhen I was out looking for a job last December, I met with quite a few recruiting firms here in town. I was rather surprised that none of them were interested in anything I did prior to obtaining my Computer Science degree. They were only interested in hearing about jobs that I had after graduating ... read more »

Redesigning zenutech.com
April 8th, 2008 at 11:12am | No CommentsLast week I launched the newest incarnation of zenutech.com. The last redesign was three years ago, used table layouts, a lot of image files, and as a result was really sluggish. It’s definitely not good when your site takes almost ten seconds to load and you’re marketing speedy web hosting. A fresh new design with ... read more »

WDN08 kicks off
January 30th, 2008 at 1:27pm | No CommentsThis morning I arrived at the conference, registered, picked up my totebag full of swag, and instantly ran into some folks I met at the conference last year. It was great to see some familiar faces and I’m looking forward to catching up. The swag bag this year actually contained a couple of really cool ... read more »

Attending Web Directions North 2008
January 28th, 2008 at 9:08pm | No CommentsI doubted I was going to make it to Web Directions North this year, but as I just wrote, things have changed for me in the past few months. My new employer has been generous enough to send me to the conference and I couldn’t be happier to be returning for a second year. I’m ... read more »

WordPress 2.5 “Zeldman” Coming Soon
January 22nd, 2008 at 12:42am | 2 CommentsOriginal illustration by Sergio Villarreal. There’s been quite a bit of buzz about the redesign of the WordPress Admin for the 2.5 release due in March, that I can only assume will be code named “Zeldman”. Although the small improvements with each release have helped, the WordPress Admin has needed some attention for a while ... read more »

Redesigned and more
November 5th, 2007 at 4:58pm | 7 CommentsIn a few weeks it will be exactly a year since I redesigned this site. It really has become an annual event. This time I’ve redesigned it but also rebranded and added new features. Rebranded I really liked the domain brad.touesnard.com. I mean come on, firstname.lastname.com is pretty sweet. That is unless your last name ... read more »

Web Directions North 2008
October 16th, 2007 at 10:09pm | 1 CommentLast January I had a blast at Web Directions North here in Vancouver. Others must have as well because they’re hosting it here again this coming January. This year’s lineup of speakers include most of the rock stars from last year. In addition, Jonathan Snook will be showing off his Ajax-foo this year and a ... read more »

Why do I blog?
February 20th, 2007 at 3:12pm | 1 CommentAccording Wikipedia’s meme page the Chuck Norris phenomenon is a meme. So I guess I’d be quite a hypocrite if I didn’t respond to Jonathan tagging me in his meme post. Though, I think this is more of a blogified chain letter, which I’ve just found out is a type of meme, damnit! Sharing My ... read more »

Web Directions North Wrapup
February 13th, 2007 at 11:13am | 4 CommentsI’m amazed the degree to which Web Directions North has exceeded my expectations. A couple of weeks ago I mentioned my high expectations but the people, atmosphere, and inspiring talks really blew me away. Having talked to a lot of web professionals attending the conference, I’ve gathered that this conference was about positive reinforcement above ... read more »
