What does it cost to build a web site?
April 4th, 2010 at 11:08am | 8 CommentsI’m often asked by friends and family, “What does it cost to build a web site?” And although I’m sure none of them will read this, at least now I have something to point them to. Asking “What does it cost to build a web site?” is a lot like asking, “What does it cost to ... read more »

Developing SharURL: Lessons learned developing a new startup
July 6th, 2009 at 1:15pm | 7 CommentsLast year around this time I decided to pursue an idea for a simple file sharing service without any real planning. Although it shouldn’t have taken more than a few months of part-time work, I just managed to launch SharURL today (you will need this invite code to signup: p9q1h). I made a lot of mistakes ... read more »

Photoshop Tip: Hiding all other layers
May 17th, 2009 at 1:16pm | No CommentsIt's sometimes funny what new things you discover even after years of using the same tool. Photoshop happens to be one of those tools. The following tip is just a little something I figured out recently (by accident) that has really helped me when cutting up PSDs. read more »

Redesigned and reorganized
February 8th, 2009 at 6:12pm | No CommentsIf you’ve been following me on Twitter, you may have noticed the changes I’ve been making to this site over the past few months. A redesigned header, a new portfolio page, and this past weekend, I launched the new homepage. It’s been just over a year since the last redesign. Last year, I added a ... read more »

Font linking, type foundries, and DRM
December 2nd, 2008 at 3:45pm | 5 CommentsChris Shiflett recently wrote a great article summing up the current state of font linking. Font linking is simply using the @font-face statement in CSS to link to a font file, which can then be used by the browser to render text. Using select boxes to convey choice
August 29th, 2008 at 4:02pm | 2 CommentsIf you live in Canada, you would have to be living under a rock for the past few weeks to not notice Bell‘s agressive rebranding campaign. They’ve been peppering nearly every medium with their ‘er’ ads. From bus stop signs to television ads, you can’t really escape it. Curious what they had done with their ... read more »

Dumb Idea: Let’s write a new templating language
August 21st, 2008 at 10:30am | 6 CommentsAt work, we’re going to be redesigning a site that is running Textpattern. As I’ve never worked with Textpattern before, I’ve been brushing up. After about two minutes of reading, I find out that it has it’s own XHTML-style templating language. Textpattern immediately loses a lot of credibility. The article I was reading rationalizes the ... read more »

“Professional” Work Experience
June 21st, 2008 at 1:06am | 3 CommentsWhen I was out looking for a job last December, I met with quite a few recruiting firms here in town. I was rather surprised that none of them were interested in anything I did prior to obtaining my Computer Science degree. They were only interested in hearing about jobs that I had after graduating ... read more »

Redesigning zenutech.com
April 8th, 2008 at 11:12am | No CommentsLast week I launched the newest incarnation of zenutech.com. The last redesign was three years ago, used table layouts, a lot of image files, and as a result was really sluggish. It’s definitely not good when your site takes almost ten seconds to load and you’re marketing speedy web hosting. A fresh new design with ... read more »

WDN08 kicks off
January 30th, 2008 at 1:27pm | No CommentsThis morning I arrived at the conference, registered, picked up my totebag full of swag, and instantly ran into some folks I met at the conference last year. It was great to see some familiar faces and I’m looking forward to catching up. The swag bag this year actually contained a couple of really cool ... read more »
