What does it cost to build a web site?
April 4th, 2010 at 11:08am | 8 CommentsI’m often asked by friends and family, “What does it cost to build a web site?” And although I’m sure none of them will read this, at least now I have something to point them to. Asking “What does it cost to build a web site?” is a lot like asking, “What does it cost to ... read more »

Developing SharURL: Lessons learned developing a new startup
July 6th, 2009 at 1:15pm | 7 CommentsLast year around this time I decided to pursue an idea for a simple file sharing service without any real planning. Although it shouldn’t have taken more than a few months of part-time work, I just managed to launch SharURL today (you will need this invite code to signup: p9q1h). I made a lot of mistakes ... read more »

Toxic Subcultures
June 25th, 2009 at 4:57pm | No CommentsThe latest article by Rands, “A Toxic Paradox“ struck a cord with me. It describes three basic types of personalities/relationships in the office: those that are natural, those that require work, and those that are toxic. When asked a simple question, a toxic person would burst out: THIS ISN’T A SMALL CHANGE. YOU HAVEN’T THOUGHT THIS ... read more »

Font linking, type foundries, and DRM
December 2nd, 2008 at 3:45pm | 5 CommentsChris Shiflett recently wrote a great article summing up the current state of font linking. Font linking is simply using the @font-face statement in CSS to link to a font file, which can then be used by the browser to render text. Though the specification has been in CSS2 for over a decade, font linking ... read more »

iPhone hardware could be expensive for existing Rogers customers
July 9th, 2008 at 1:07pm | 3 CommentsIf you’re a current Rogers Wireless customer (as I am), you may have assumed that you will be able to get an iPhone for the advertised prices of $199 and $299 for the 8GB and 16GB respectively by signing a 3-year contract. However, this is not necessarily the case. I called Rogers today and asked ... read more »

Working from home, not for me
January 28th, 2008 at 8:42pm | 1 CommentIn July last year, I started working full-time for my company, Zenutech Inc. I knew working from home would be a bit of an adjustment, but I couldn’t have predicted the challenges. At first it was great. Get up around 9am, shower, eat, and install myself at my desk for the day. Then after a ... read more »

Blog Action Day – The Environment
October 16th, 2007 at 12:03pm | 3 CommentsSo apparently I missed blog action day yesterday. Since it involved such an important topic (the environment), I figured I’d put in a late post anyways. Today I went to the CMA‘s web site and completed the Do Not Contact Service registration. I’ve heard rumours that it doesn’t work very well, but hopefully it will ... read more »

Reopening coal mines in Cape Breton
September 27th, 2007 at 9:42am | 1 CommentI’m a regular listener of The Current on CBC Radio One, but Monday was the first time I sent an e-mail voicing my opinion. It turns out it was good enough to read on the air this morning, so I figured it’s good enough to post here. You can check out a podcast of the ... read more »

Monetization of Facebook
July 31st, 2007 at 3:41pm | 3 CommentsI started writing a comment for Markus’ post about Facebook monetization, but it got long and post-worthy. Basically, Markus said that Facebook’s only two options to improve their advertising situation is to better position ads or find advertisers willing to pay higher CPM rates. I would argue there’s a third option that the Facebook team ... read more »

Power to the people
July 12th, 2007 at 1:10pm | 1 CommentMatt’s post pointed me to this article about film studio execs failure to understand their industry. I’ve previously expressed my frustration with the movie industry, their lack of understanding of what people want, and their unwillingness to make changes in their industry. This article strengthens that argument on another front. One of the best parts ... read more »
