Farewell ActiveState, Hello Zenutech
August 16th, 2007 at 4:00pm | 4 CommentsAfter two great years with ActiveState, I finally said goodbye a few weeks ago. ActiveState is an amazing group of people. Everyone is extremely smart, passionate about their work, yet (this is the kicker in this industry) still very social. I will really miss the energy there. It was tough to leave, but I am ... read more »

Web Directions North Wrapup
February 13th, 2007 at 11:13am | 4 CommentsI’m amazed the degree to which Web Directions North has exceeded my expectations. A couple of weeks ago I mentioned my high expectations but the people, atmosphere, and inspiring talks really blew me away. Having talked to a lot of web professionals attending the conference, I’ve gathered that this conference was about positive reinforcement above ... read more »

Web Directions North: Day 2
February 8th, 2007 at 12:28pm | No CommentsI’m sitting in on the Web Apps 2: Developer to designer talk by a couple of Yahoo! folks, one of which works on Flickr. Very interesting how much thought they are putting into design at Flickr. Also interesting chatter about client-side performance where some design ideas had to be abandoned due to performance degradation. Next ... read more »

Web Directions North: Day 1
February 7th, 2007 at 12:24pm | 1 CommentI’m sitting in on the Ajax Kung Fu talk by Jeremy Keith and doing a lot of nodding. I couldn’t agree more with his position on maintaining the thin client status of the browser. In the past, I’ve strongly argued from this position. I remember specifically arguing against returning XML from the server, parsing it, ... read more »

Web Directions North: Day 0
February 7th, 2007 at 11:33am | 2 CommentsYesterday, I attended the CSS + Javascript = Magic workshop and was impressed by some of the examples presented by Aaron Gustafson and Andy Clarke. I hadn’t really taken a look at CSS3 yet, so there was a lot in that area that was new and exciting to me. The DOM scripting concepts and suggestions ... read more »

Oh, save me Jebus!
August 3rd, 2006 at 10:01am | 1 CommentI had a great time at OSCON in Portland, Oregon last week with ActiveState, especially the last night we were there. We went downtown to a bar and stopped at Powell’s bookstore on the way. There was a display of action figures in the entrance way and they had the best Jesus figure ever! The ... read more »

Busy, Busy, Busy
June 4th, 2006 at 7:23pm | No CommentsSummertime always results in a decrease in blogging activity for me just because I’d rather be outside. However, lately I’ve been swamped by work. I’ve been putting in a lot of extra hours at ActiveState to finish up the new e-commerce system and Pierre and I have been working hard to launch an ad campaign ... read more »

Web Usability: Down with select boxes
March 23rd, 2006 at 11:15am | 4 CommentsBefore After I hate clicking on select boxes to reveal only two or three items to choose from. It bugs the hell out of me. Why? In order to select an item, you have to click to reveal what’s in the select box, then click on the item to choose. That’s one extra step than ... read more »
