Firefox Error Message: “Well, this is embarrassing.”
September 1st, 2009 at 9:52am | 10 CommentsI received this amusing Firefox error message when opening Firefox this morning. The strange thing is that Firefox still let me load all my tabs from the previous browsing session, so I’m not sure if there was actually a problem. I upgraded an extension as I was opening, but I’m not sure if it was ... read more »

Fix WordPress “Missed schedule” error on Media Temple (dv) / Plesk
July 18th, 2009 at 10:37pm | 15 CommentsAfter a lot of debugging, I was able to figure out that Media Temple’s (dv) configuration was responsible for the “Missed schedule” errors I was getting in WordPress. By default, the /etc/hosts file looks like this: 127.0.0.1 yourdomain.com yourdomain localhost localhost.localdomain To execute cron tasks, WordPress needs to post to the URL http://yourdomain.com/wp-cron.php?doing_wp_cron. This isn’t ... read more »

Developing SharURL: Lessons learned developing a new startup
July 6th, 2009 at 1:15pm | 7 CommentsLast year around this time I decided to pursue an idea for a simple file sharing service without any real planning. Although it shouldn’t have taken more than a few months of part-time work, I just managed to launch SharURL today (you will need this invite code to signup: p9q1h). Toxic Subcultures
June 25th, 2009 at 4:57pm | No CommentsThe latest article by Rands, “A Toxic Paradox“ struck a cord with me. It describes three basic types of personalities/relationships in the office: those that are natural, those that require work, and those that are toxic. When asked a simple question, a toxic person would burst out: THIS ISN’T A SMALL CHANGE. YOU HAVEN’T THOUGHT THIS ... read more »

Presenting my travel journal
May 17th, 2009 at 11:48am | No CommentsIt’s been a couple years now since my first trip outside of North America. I remember thinking about starting a travel blog then, but it’s only now that I managed to scratch that itch. Because I want to keep my main blog focused on Web Development, I’ve separated the travel journal into it’s own section ... read more »

MacBook as a battery pack for iPod/iPhone
March 9th, 2009 at 9:57pm | No CommentsThe day before my trip to China, I went to Future Shop and bought a battery pack for my iPod Touch. I only realized when I got home that it was the type that blocked the headphone jack. Back to Future Shop I went. My worry turned to despair as I discovered they didn’t have ... read more »

Adding Google Tasks to your Gmail sidebar
February 21st, 2009 at 10:14pm | 15 CommentsThis weekend I finally joined the massive number of people who forward all their mail to Gmail. The main reason I finally switched can be credited to the sidebar gadgets that were launched in October (but that I only found out about recently). Although the Google Calendar and Google Docs gadgets are excellent, I also ... read more »
