Update to my previous post “Trans Fats May be Banned in Canada“.
Well, the NDP got the ball rolling as they said they would by introducing a motion in the House of Commons on November 18th to outlaw trans fats. After only a day of debating, parliament announced the formation of a task force that will “develop recommendations and strategies for reducing trans fats in Canadian foods to the lowest levels possible.” Although this may be cause enough for a small celebration, the task force has a year to come up with recommendations, so we won’t be seeing any legislation just yet. We can only hope that the recommendations will lead to strict bans on foods containing trans fats. All Canadians owe a huge thank you to MP Pat Martin for working to protect Canadians by encouraging Canada to become the second country (Denmark is the first) to ban trans fats.
Several sources have been reporting this story, such as Health Canada and CTV.ca, but my favorite is the Californian lobby group BanTransFats.com, Inc. who are loving the latest Canadian actions and reporting all the details.
It appears that this minority government is working afterall.
