Touch Down at Vancouver International

Airplane LandingLast Sunday, Crystal and I touched down at Vancouver International Airport at about 10:00 PM PST, 2 hours later than our scheduled arrival time. We ran into a bit of trouble in Toronto. The Airbus we were supposed to fly on had a mechanical problem, as did the plane that replaced it. Finally they put us on a 767 that wasn’t broken. Unfortunately once we boarded the 767, the catering took an hour to arrive and the crew had to be changed which took another hour. Why they didn’t just leave us in the terminal until everything was ready, I’ll never know. By the time we took off everyone was tired, dehydrated, and hungry.

BrinksDespite an unpleasant flight, we arrived in one piece and greeted Bucky and Shelley (Crystal’s brother and his wife) at the airport. Their home in Surrey is fuckin’ amazing and comes complete with a retired police dog named Brinks.

This week has been eventful to say the least. On Monday, we received all of the stuff we shipped, got the internet hooked up, and got our new cell phone numbers. Tuesday I had a job interview in downtown Vancouver with Riptown Media in the afternoon. Crystal and I took our first trip on the SkyTrain. In the evening, I got a drive back into the city to play some Ultimate in the VUL. Thursday I had a job interview with Mediatech Internet Inc. downtown again.

Unfortunately, I found out yesterday that I didn’t get the job at Mediatech. It takes over an hour to commute from Surrey to downtown Vancouver, so I’m going to try applying for jobs in Surrey and Burnaby. Crystal landed the Stanley Park job and it takes her 1.5 hours to get to work. Pretty rough!

    Hi Brad,

I am considering a move to Surrey. By Sky Train how long of a commute would it be to downtown Vancouver?

    What about by car?

    Jim,

Skytrain is about 45 mins to downtown from Surrey. The transit web site is very good for time estimates: http://translink.bc.ca/ Unfortunately living next to the Skytrain in Surrey is bad, very bad neighborhood. The Walley area is one of the worst areas in the Lower Mainland. I lived in South Surrey (49th Ave and King George) and it was very good neighborhood, but another 20 mins to the Skytrain. I don’t recommend living in Surrey and commuting to downtown unless you have a good reason to live there.

By car, it is significantly longer to commute to downtown due to the traffic. Probably 1.5 hours, maybe more.

    Hope this helps,

    Brad

Hey – interested to hear your thoughts on the riptown interview. My friend is applying there – but it appears they only have one client? (if i put the business here – your site blocks my post).

    Cheers,
    John

The Riptown interview was pretty good, but I wasn’t what they were looking for at all. They wanted someone with a lot of SEO experience, someone that worked for a large company and placed their site in the top for competitive keywords. I’m glad I didn’t get it, I don’t think I would have liked it at all.

The company seems good, they are growing quite rapidly as the online poker industry is also growing rapidly.

Hey – just out of curiosity, why don’t you think you would have liked it? I’m trying to find out as much as I can about Riptown….

I just meant the job didn’t seem a good fit for me.
