I’m a regular listener of The Current on CBC Radio One, but Monday was the first time I sent an e-mail voicing my opinion. It turns out it was good enough to read on the air this morning, so I figured it’s good enough to post here. You can check out a podcast of the segment “Coal Mining in Nova Scotia.”
Now, time to listen in on what Jian’s got going today on Q.
I consider myself a proponent of the environmental movement, however I believe currently, we live in a time where tradeoffs are necessary to invoke change. Especially in Cape Breton, where funding to charge new development is scarce.
As such, reopening coal mines in Cape Breton could be a good thing if a majority of the profit of the operation is allocated for renewable energy research and development in Cape Breton. However, as it is a Swedish corporation exploring the opportunity, it is unlikely they will have the best interests of Cape Breton (being Swedish) or the environment (being a corporation) in mind. Cape Breton needs to develop their own industry so they can reap all the benefits of raping their small part of the earth and can invest in its future sustainability.
Sincerely,
A Cape Bretoner living in Vancouver.

Forge about the provincial government protecting our environment..Last year the federal government sold the Donkin mine to multinational corporation Xstrata, and the Prince Mine to NS company Pioneer Coal. Ignoring near unanimous opposition from the public and all levels of government and political parties, last month they started strip mining the high polluting Prince Mine coal and are trucking it to the province’s highest polluting generating station at Lingan, but even the CBC doesn’t want you to know. See http://www.c-a-s-m.org for more info.
