Well it’s done. The beautiful country I am proud to call home has turned a shade darker tonight, having given the power to a Conservative government. Mind you, I would not be quite as concerned if these were the old Progressive Conservatives that existed apart from the Canadian Alliance party. No, these are the “New” Conservatives made up of very right-wing members, many of which were Canadian Alliance members. This is a party who’s agenda even scared some of its key members to defect to other parties (Scott Brison, Belinda Stronach).
Although I may not move to Iceland (yet anyways) and I am disappointed with the turnout, I do take confort in the numbers; the fact that we chose another minority government and that the Conservatives will be held to the fire by the NDP and the Liberals. Hopefully with this kind of limited power and need for negotiating, the Conservatives will not be able to inflict too much damage.
A couple of years ago, the “wolf in sheep’s clothing” analogy seemed to frighten enough Canadians into voting Liberal instead of NDP to ensure a non-Conservative win despite the Liberal scandal buzz at the time. However, this time around people didn’t seem willing to make the same sacrifice. The result, the NDP getting a lot more votes at the Liberals expense and a Conservative government’s rise to power.
Anyways, I’m sick of watching these results on the CBC, time to change the channel. Ooooo Dougie Howser and the lesbian witch from Buffy the Vampire Slayer! This has to be good, right? Man, do I ever have to cancel my cable!

It’s not as bad as you might think, IMHO. I’d take a strong NDP, weak Tory & Liberal showing over a strong Liberal or Tory majority — any day.
Harper can’t do anything too radical because he doesn’t have the strength to pull it off… he’s in for a really rough term.
The NDP actually picked up quite a few seats, so that’s a good sign that things will get better overall, not worse. Next time the NDP will do even better because Jack is really gaining ground. Nobody’s buying the strategic vote nonsense anymore.
Eventually the NDP will finally get a shot at running the country. Because we’re seeing two minority terms for each Libs and Tories — Canada won’t forget how stupid things were with the Libs or the Tories.
I predict that the next election the offical opposition will be the NDP, unless something *really* amazing happens and they get in.
